Casper Police Department –Chief McPheeters Announces Retirement


Casper, Wyoming (January 10, 2025) - Chief of Police, Keith McPheeters announced his retirement this afternoon at a City of Casper press conference with City Manager J. Carter Napier presiding. Chief McPheeters was recommended for the position in 2017 by City Manager Napier and began his term with the Casper Police Department in December of 2017. Chief McPheeters came to Casper after retiring in June of 2016 from the Farmington, NM Police Department where he served for more than 24 years. His last day of service at the Casper Police Department will be January 31, 2025.

The Casper Police Department has 110 sworn officers and is the umbrella department for the Public Safety Communication Center and Metro Animal Services. Under Chief McPheeters’ leadership, the Casper Police Department became the first department in Wyoming to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA).

Deputy Chief Shane Chaney will serve as Interim Chief of Police for the Casper Police Department beginning February 1st, 2025. Deputy Chief Chaney began his career at the Casper Police Department in August of 2000 and has served in multiple capacities at the department for nearly 25 years. Chaney acknowledged Chief McPheeters’ commitment to excellence along with his influence over the training, policy implementation, and community interactions over the last seven years.

Chief McPheeters internally announced his retirement on Thursday, January 10th, 2025 he said, “I am intensely proud of this department and the men and women who work here.” In today’s press conference, he acknowledged and thanked his wife, their four children, and the friends and family who have supported him in his career. Chief McPheeters expressed excitement for the future that lies ahead for him personally and the Casper Police Department.
