Parkway Standards

The parkway is the area between the back of the street curb and the property line and includes any sidewalk or landscaping.  Often, people think of the parkway as a “buffer” area between the sidewalk and the street.  There are certain standards that regulate the use of parkways.

  1. A Parkway Parking Permit must be obtained from City Finance to park any vehicle in the parkway.  Contact City Finance at 235-8400 or Code Enforcement at 235-8254 for more information.
  2. An application from City Finance with a non-refundable fee of $25.00 is required, as well as a petition signed by your neighbors.  In addition, the annual fee is $25.00 and must be renewed each year with a petition.
  3. Permits are limited to one vehicle per lot, and do not run with the land and are not transferable.
  4. The parkway may not be used to store or park any type of commercial vehicle, building, equipment, sign or any item intended for commercial display.
  5. The use of a parkway is limited to landscaping, sidewalks and driveways (by curb cut access) to the street.
  6. The parkway area may not be used for the repair or maintenance of any vehicle.
  7. The parkway may not be used for temporary or permanent storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.

Can I cut down and remove a tree located in the parkway in front of my house?

A.

You may remove the tree, but a permit is required from the Parks Department (235-8283) to remove the tree from the parkway. If removal will obstruct traffic, a street closure permit needs to be obtained from the Engineering Department (235-8341).

Q.

May I plant flowers and landscape my parkway?

A.

Landscaping of parkways is allowed. If you live on a corner lot, the height of any vegetation, fencing, or other materials may not exceed 36 inches.

Q.

Who is responsible for trimming trees and cutting weeds in the parkway?

A.

It is the responsibility of the property owner to maintain the parkway free and clear of weeds and to trim any tree branches that are in violation of City codes. If an outside party trims the trees in the parkway, they must be a licensed arborist.
